Paul Reising Obituary

Paul Reising March 8, 1934 ~ Oct 23, 2010 Resident of Moraga Paul Reising passed away at his home Saturday after a courageous battle with cancer. Paul was born in Gary, Indiana, one of six children. He graduated from Horace Mann high school, receiving a degree in Engineering from Purdue University in 1956 and an MBA from the University of Chicago in 1961. Paul started his career in the steel industry with US Steel Corporation as a young man where he met his "lovely bride", as he liked to call her, his beloved wife of nearly 50 years, Jackie. Through his work as a sales manager, they moved across the country with several steel companies from the Chicago area to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Moraga, Denver, returning to Moraga where he was a longtime resident before recently moving to Rossmoor. Paul was an enthusiastic golfer, avid trout fisherman and a NASTAR medal skier. He was instantly recognizable on the slopes-wearing a bright orange parka and matching orange "Wheaties" hat-skiing until the age of 70. He always had a good story-whether it be about the fish that got away or the putt that went awry. Paul knew how to make people laugh! He was the founder of the WCTU in Moraga in 1974 which stoked his love of good wines and cemented his relationship with friends that would last a lifetime, as they shared laughter, stories, and of course, fine wine! The experience also planted the seeds for what later would become a second career for Paul-that of amateur wine-maker. He produced his first vintage of what would be known as "Clos Du Bub" in 1990. Over the years, he made award-winning wines: Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and yes, even "Reising's Reisling"-a wink and a nod to the mispronunciation of his last name since he moved his family to California. Paul loved sharing the fruits of his labor and those around him loved to drink them. Wine judges across the state apparently did too. He won much gold and silver at amateur tasting competitions around California. After retiring, he created the first wine tasting group for Moraga SIRS. Paul also loved to travel and spend time with his family. He leaves behind his wife, Jackie; daughters Patti (Rusty) of Moraga and Jennifer (Paul) of Arlington, Virginia; son John of Alameda; and six grandchildren. He is also survived by his twin sister Fran Bartell of Bel Air, Maryland; sister Ellen Morrison (Keith) of Los Altos; brother Tom (Nancy) of Oak Forest, Illinois; sister Madge of Pensacola, Florida; and brother Greg (Sharon) of Gary, Indiana. A Memorial Service for Paul will be held Thursday November 4, at 2:00pm at the Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian Church, 49 Knox Drive, Lafayette. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the ASCO Cancer Foundation, "In Memory of Paul Reising for Multiple Myeloma Cancer Research".
