Jose Benjamin "Ben" Paredes, born December 19, 1935, died on February 10, 2013 after a courageous battle with lung cancer. He died peacefully at home with his family by his side. Ben is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Grace Yvonne Paredes, his daughters Stephanie Hartwig, Gabriela Paredes-Galvin, Anna Maria Paredes and Flor de los Angeles Paredes. Ben was a loving father and grandfather and was blessed to have seven grandchildren: Lorena Anderson, Marjorie Turner-Paredes, Allysa Turner-Paredes, Dylan Hartwig, Jared Hartwig, Grace Hartwig and Justin Hartwig. Ben resided with his family in Pleasant Hill and was active in his community, supporting many local initiatives for neighborhood improvement. One of Ben's proudest accomplishments was serving as a Scottish Rite Master of Kadosh for the Martinez Masonic Lodge, where he routinely participated in community outreach activities and volunteer initiatives. A masonic service is planned for Saturday, February 16 at 11am. The service will be held at the Martinez Masonic Lodge located at 700 Masonic Street, Martinez. A reception will follow at the Lodge. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Ben's name can be made to Bags for Kids, Martinez Masonic Lodge, P.O.Box 2221, Martinez, CA 94553.
