John "Jack" Saunders Obituary


 

John "Jack" B. Saunders Resident of Walnut Creek John "Jack" B. Saunders, 92, passed away peacefully at home in Walnut Creek on Monday October 25, surrounded by his loving family. His beloved wife of 64 years, Merle, passed in 2004. He is survived by his son Scott Saunders; daughter Debbie Pugh; son-in-law Bill Pugh; grandchildren Casey, Kelly and Morgan Pugh; niece Sallee Woodmansee and her husband Jack. He was blessed to have Judith Elliot, his caregiver, with him for the last 2 years. Jack was born in Berkeley December 23, 1917, graduated Berkeley High School, and attended San Francisco City College. He joined the Navy in 1941, and worked during the war for Southern Pacific Railroad, coordinating war efforts. He married Merle Morgan February 12, 1941 and for the next 40 years continued to work for the railroad. Jack was an accomplished musician and played in dance bands with his brother Bill. He was a member of the Masons, active in the Orinda Community Church, Boy Scouts with son Scott, and Orinda Park Pool as the starter. He played golf with the SIRs group, loved attending dance classes with Merle, camping and fishing with his family, traveling with Merle and friends, and meeting with Bridge Club friends. All who knew him appreciated his sense of humor, love of family, strength, and will to live. Services will be at Orinda Community Church, 10 Irwin Way, Orinda on Monday, Nov. 8 at 2:00pm. Donations can be made to the National Wildlife Foundation, or your favorite charity.
