George Victor Alexeeff
Resident of Walnut Creek
George Alexeeff died peacefully at home on June 29th, after a brief illness.
George was born in San Francisco, CA in 1954, a few years after his parents immigrated to the U.S. as refugees displaced by World War II. His life-long interest in protecting the environment started early: camping as a Boy Scout, backpacking in Yosemite's wilderness areas, and rescuing birds after the 1971 oil spill in the San Francisco Bay. After earning a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Swarthmore College and a Ph.D. in pharmacology and toxicology from UC-Davis, George spent nearly 30 years in public service, most recently as Director of California's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment. He served on national work groups for the U.S. EPA and the National Academy of Sciences, held leadership roles in professional organizations, authored or co-authored more than 70 articles in scientific journals, and taught environmental courses at UC-Davis as an adjunct professor. He found time to mentor young scientists and was proud to have inspired them to pursue careers protecting public health.
George is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years, Jean Ackerman; his daughter Stacey Alexeeff and son-in-law Joseph Roscoe of Oakland, CA; his daughter Kathryn Ackerman-Alexeeff of Arlington, VA; and his older brothers, Valentin Alexeeff and Andrei Alexeeff, and their families.
Friends and family are invited to a memorial service on Sunday, July 12, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. with a reception following. The service will be held by St. Giles Episcopal Church at Saint Mary's College Chapel, 1928 St. Mary's Road, Moraga, CA. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the George Alexeeff Memorial Environmental Toxicology Award at UC-Davis (https://give.ucdavis.edu/Go/Alexeeff)
