Eileen Lukes Obituary

Eileen B. Lukes Resident of El Cerrito Eileen Boyd Lukes (b. 1926) passed away in the early morning hours of Monday, October 4, 2010 surrounded by her family. The world is a better place thanks to her dedicated career as a volunteer and generous, loving nature. She leaves a legacy of open-hearted acceptance of people from all walks of life, unconditional love for her family and friends, and years of dedication to her volunteer work. During World War II she was a member of the Harmonettes, a singing group which launched many new warships, resulting in her name being on the Memorial in Washington, D.C. She was on the Board of Directors of the American Heart Association for four years, a two-term president and 42-year member of the Cypress Branch of Children's Hospital, a founder of the Children's Hospital Family House, and the founder and long-time president of Oakland's Chapter 188 Mended Hearts Association. She was honored for her work by being the recipient of the first Lifetime Achievement Award from Children's Hospital and a Special Congressional Recognition extolling her extensive contributions to East Bay health organizations. Eileen is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Eugene Lukes; sister, Barbara Morris; daughter, Susan West (Jim); grandchildren, Joseph West and Russell West (Angela); and nephew, Paul Morris (Joellen, Annalise, Alex). A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday at 4:00pm. For more information contact Sunset View Mortuary (510) 525-5111.
