Constance Burgess, 93, died at her home in Concord, CA on Feb. 5, 2011. Born and raised in Oakland, CA, she graduated from UC Berkeley in 1940 with a BA in English Dramatic Literature. At Cal she was an actress in Little Theatre plays and also performed in radio productions. Connie was happily married for 49 years to Sherwood D. Burgess, business school administrator, local historian, and author, until his death in 1994. When first married, she and Sherwood had a clothing store called "Connie's Shop" in the Montclair district of Oakland. Always a devoted wife and mother, she was also a reading tutor for children for many years. After moving to Concord in 1978, she was an enthusiastic docent at Shadelands Museum in Walnut Creek. She was an avid reader, and enjoyed painting and home decorating. Connie is survived by her two daughters, Dennise and Pamela, son-in-law George, four grandchildren, Timothy, Marissa, Christina, and Joseph, and brother, Tony Sousa.
Family and friends are invited to attend her funeral Mass at Our Lady of Grace Church at 3433 Somerset Ave. in Castro Valley on Friday, February 11, at 10:00 am. Rosary and viewing will precede the Mass at 9:15 in the church. Reception in parish hall, and interment at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Lafayette will follow.
